Downtown District Selects New President

HOUSTON – The Houston Downtown Management District announced that Donald J. Henderson, chairman of its Marketing and Communications Committee, has been elected president of its board of directors, replacing Paul Layne, executive vice president of Trizec Properties, Inc.

The Houston Downtown Management District was formed by an act of the Texas Legislature in 1995. The District is operated under the guidance of a 30-member board of directors, each serving a four-year term, representing property owners, managers, tenants and residents in downtown Houston. Nominees to the Board are approved by the Mayor and City Council.

The board's primary focus is to leverage public funds with private resources to improve facilities and services and to accelerate area improvements. Directors are responsible for overseeing the District’s service and improvement plan and operations budget, with the aim of sustaining and managing downtown while continuing redevelopment to make it a diverse, accessible and perpetually active core of the Houston region.

Henderson, currently managing director of the Hyatt Regency Houston, is chairman emeritus of the Greater Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau, a member of the Downtown Houston Alliance's executive committee and a member of the Greater Houston Partnership's executive committee. He is also a former chairman of the Greater Houston Hotel & Motel Association.

"Don Henderson is an excellent choice to help ensure that downtown continues to evolve and flourish," said Robert M. Eury, executive director of the Houston Downtown Management District. "In addition, the board will benefit from Paul Layne's continued membership."

Henderson has worked for Hyatt for more than three decades, originally joining as a director of sales and marketing at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn in Michigan in 1975. He rose through the management ranks in locations including: Dallas, Flint, Michigan; downtown Fort Worth; Princeton, New Jersey; and Los Angeles. He arrived in Houston in 1994 with his wife, Maggie, a novelist and graphic artist, and has been at the Hyatt Regency Houston ever since.

"I look forward to helping guide the board forward as we work together to turn downtown into one of the premier urban centers in the U.S.," Henderson said.
